    From the perspectives of both : the impact of the therapist\u27s job on the relationship between therapists and their partners

    This study was done in order to examine, from the perspectives of therapists and their partners, the impact of the therapist\u27s job on the couple\u27s relationship. Each participant was encouraged to offer examples of both positive and negative experiences in their relationship and how they believed these experiences were affected – if at all – by the mind-set and/or skill-set of the therapist. Twelve participants were interviewed: six therapists and their partners. The major findings were that most of the participants believed that the therapists\u27 use self-reflection during times of conflict had a positive impact on the relationship. The extended family valued the therapist\u27s advice in matters such as child-rearing and conflict resolution. Several participants believed that it was not advantageous for therapists to bring their skill-set into their relationship or into matters that involved the extended-family unless asked to do so. Therapists needed some transition time when they got home from work. Also included in the findings is the type of person each of the partners in this study perceived their therapist-partner to be. Future research in this area is needed in order to gain additional perspective from partners of therapists. This would increase awareness of therapists regarding how their profession impacts their personal relationships and would thus be of value to the field of clinical social work

    Formation of Porous Silicon through the nanosized Pores of an Anodized Alumina Template

    This letter demonstrates the ability to fabricate porous silicon through the nanoscale pores of an anodized alumina template formed on a silicon substrate. The alumina template acts as a protective coating on the porous silicon surface increasing its mechanical integrity, thus eliminating the need for delicate handling that is usually required for this material system. The optical properties of the porous silicon formed through the template show characteristics similar to that of normally formed porous silicon. In addition, the porous siliconoptical properties show very little degradation with time; the alumina coating is believed to contribute to this improved stability. The results are significant and can increase the likelihood of commercial applications of this material

    Education debt and making a career choice in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors

    We surveyed a sample of Millennial college seniors who are job seekers to investigate if: (1) education debt discourages students from pursuing (lower paying) public or nonprofit careers, and (2) whether PSM overrides the considerations students might make about entering lower paying sectors (i.e., public and nonprofit sectors) as their education debt rises. To our surprise, we find that education debt is related to a greater propensity to select lower paying public sector careers but not lower paying nonprofit jobs (except for those with high debt loads). Moderate levels of PSM are required for students to select public sector careers and high levels of PSM are required for students to select nonprofit careers with rising education debt. We conclude that individuals with a high debt load may be attracted to public policy setting and select public sector careers, while those who display empathy and compassion are attracted to nonprofit work in service to others

    Using the Fermilab Proton Source for a Muon to Electron Conversion Experiment

    The Fermilab proton source is capable of providing 8 GeV protons for both the future long-baseline neutrino program (NuMI), and for a new program of low energy muon experiments. In particular, if the 8 GeV protons are rebunched and then slowly extracted into an external beamline, the resulting proton beam would be suitable for a muon-to-electron conversion experiment designed to improve on the existing sensitivity by three orders of magnitude. We describe a scheme for the required beam manipulations. The scheme uses the Accumulator for momentum stacking, and the Debuncher for bunching and slow extraction. This would permit simultaneous operation of the muon program with the future NuMI program, delivering 10^20 protons per year at 8 GeV for the muon program at the cost of a modest (~10%) reduction in the protons available to the neutrino program.Comment: 18 pages, 7 figure

    Andrew Melville, sacred chronology and world history: the Carmina Danielis 9 and the Antichristus

    The accepted view of the ecclesiastical reformer Andrew Melville (1545–1622) as the dynamic leader of the Presbyterian movement in Jacobean Scotland has been severely eroded in recent years, with particular criticism of the actual importance of his contribution to the Kirk and to Scottish higher education. While this reductionism has been necessary, it has resulted in an inversion of the overwhelmingly positive traditional image of Melville, and does not give us a rounded assessment of his life and works. This article attempts to partially redress this balance by looking at a neglected aspect of Melville's Latin writings, which showcase his talents as a humanist intellectual and biblical commentator. It focuses on two long poems that are both commentaries and paraphrases of Daniel and Revelation: the Carmina Danielis and the Antichristus. Through these poems, we see how Melville engaged with two problems exercising reformed theologians across Europe: the dating of key biblical events and the historicised meaning of prophecies within these texts. We also find evidence that Melville read widely among both contemporary and ancient commentators on both these issues

    Pressure ulcer related pain in community populations: a prevalence survey.

    BACKGROUND: Pressure ulcers are costly to the healthcare provider and can have a major impact on patient's quality of life. One of the most distressing symptoms reported is pain. There is very little published data on the prevalence and details of pain experienced by patients with pressure ulcers, particularly in community populations. The study was conducted in two community NHS sites in the North of England. METHODS: The aim was to estimate the prevalence of pressure area related pain within a community population. We also explored the type and severity of the pain and its association with pressure ulcer classification. A cross-sectional survey was performed of community nurses caseloads to identify adult patients with pressure ulcers and associated pain. Consenting patients then had a full pain assessment and verification of pressure ulcer grade. RESULTS: A total of 287 patients were identified with pressure ulcers (0.51 per 1000 adult population). Of the 176 patients who were asked, 133 (75.6%) reported pain. 37 patients consented to a detailed pain assessment. Painful pressure ulcers of all grades and on nearly all body sites were identified. Pain intensity was not related to number or severity of pressure ulcer. Both inflammatory and neuropathic pain were reported at all body sites however the proportion of neuropathic pain was greater in pressure ulcers on lower limbs. CONCLUSIONS: This study has identified the extent and type of pain suffered by community patients with pressure ulcers and indicates the need for systematic and regular pain assessment and treatment

    NCBI BLAST: a better web interface

    Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST) is a sequence similarity search program. The public interface of BLAST, http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/blast, at the NCBI website has recently been reengineered to improve usability and performance. Key new features include simplified search forms, improved navigation, a list of recent BLAST results, saved search strategies and a documentation directory. Here, we describe the BLAST web application's new features, explain design decisions and outline plans for future improvement
